Making a Tincture
scrolline

A tincture is often also called an essence and it is very easy to make. Loosely fill a glass bottle with fresh or dried herbs and add pure spirits, such as vodka, to cover. Cork tightly and allow to stand in a warm place (approximately 70 degrees) for at least 2 weeks. Shake the mixture daily during the waiting period, (once a day is enough). After the two weeks, strain and squeeze out the residue and you've got a tincture. Store the liquid in a dark or amber bottle and be sure to give it a label. At this point it can last a very long time without losing potency.

Tinctures are commonly given as drops in herb tea, diluted in a little water, or added to beverage of choice. You can also use a tincture to make a compress.

*Hint: Make a tincture of pine needles then add a drop to your bath. Remember that tinctures and essences are very concentrated so use sparingly.
