Vibration

A journey into magick, numbers and space

Understanding the power of numbers is essential to understanding magick for there is nothing solid about physical reality; even the smallest particles of matter are in constant motion. In essence, all is vibration, and vibration takes us from Pythagoras to the string theory of modern day physics.

First Pythagoras (c.582-c.507) discovered the vibration ratios of the musical scale. When he compared vibration rates of two strings tuned an octave apart and found the octave string vibrating twice as fast as the tonic string, he found a vibration ratio of 2:1; interval of a fifth to be 3:2...and so on. The numbers he used were simple numbers, primarily 1,2,3, and 4. These are the Pythagorian numbers, source of all other numbers; their cross sum (1+2+3+4) is 10. And ten takes us to the tectractys, or Symbol of Perfect Vibration, a version of which is shown below.

Just as in Magick there is a correlation with physics. This correlation is known as the string theory or M-theory and to quote Michio Kaku in the December 2004 issue of Discovery this theory...

states that all subatomic particles are different vibrations or notes on a tiny string or membrane. These aren't ordinary strings but rather strings that vibrate in higher-dimensional hyperspace.

But back to the connection between numbers. Historically, adding numbers to a ritual increases the power, while the chant of a specific number can produce energy. The ancient meanings of numbers most commonly used in numerology are as follows:

1. The origin, God, the male principle.
2. The female principle. This is also the number of evil and the Devil since it represents the first step away from 1.
3. Creation. This is the generative number — its symbol is the triangle which also represents the male genitals. Note the correspondence with the tectractys.
4. The number of the physical world — the four compass points, the four elements.
5. The number of sex. It is the male (3) plus the female (2). It is God (1) plus the physical world (4). It is also the number of our senses.
6. Known as the tranquil number. It is also, traditionally, the number of home and marriage.
7. The number of the moon (4 phases of seven days each) and the number of life rhythms. It is also the most important number in the Book of Revelations which mentions 7 a total of 54 times.
8. The intensified version 4. Eight stands for wealth and materialism.
9. The highest of the basic numbers, 9 is an intensified 3. It is 3x3 and the number of special powers.
10. The completion of the cycle. It is God (1) plus the original void (0) — the number of the world.
