Creating Sacred Space

Sacred space can be created in any room, regardless the size or location. It is as simple as understanding the power existent in the Four Elements: Earth, Fire, Air, and Water.
Begin with the element Earth: Earth represents the foundation, the base stability. Clean and groom the
environment. This means vacuuming, scrubbing, picking-up, whatever needs to be done. This is also a means of purifying, of removing any negative energies inherent in clutter or dirt which could indicate disorder rather than an environment under your control.
Add the element Fire: Candles are the basic, a white candle being the universal color, or combination of all colors. Use white candles for peace and purity, or as you would in ritual, use candles created with color of intent. For instance, Purple for power and ambition or Green for finance and luck. The energy within your space is affected by color choice, just as in candle magick. White is always safe.
For the element Air: Open a window, a door, or if necessary turn on the air conditioner. A light breeze is best but machine-produced circulation of air is more than adequate. Burn a purifying incense or scented candles.
And finally the element Water: As in ritual, bathing before entering your space will enhance your experience. Goblets or crystal bowls filled with water can be placed about the room ( this also has a mild humidifying effect). Depending on your finances and creativity you could place a miniature water fountain in the room or a picture of the sea.
By the way, this sacred space is perfect for a bedroom.
Altar Space
If you have only one room you can still have an altar. It could be in one corner of your room like a sacred little niche. It could be a board set on two bricks or an elaborate and carved table. You can make a cloth to cover your altar so what lies beneath that cloth is irrelevant. You need two things: room to place your instruments such as chalice, athame, pentacle, etc., and space to draw your circle. As long as you can get behind your altar to begin the drawing of your circle you've got enough room. The size of your circle is not paramount. What matters is that both you and your altar are within that drawn circle before you begin a ritual.
Keeping awareness and balance of all the elements, be it in daily life or ritual, increases balance and power. The more you can get your personal environment aligned with the elements as shown, the stronger you become. It is that simple.
