 Hymn to Ra
From the time of pre-dynastic Egypt, Ra was known as the maker and creator of everything we see in the visible world. The exact origin of the name Ra is unknown but at some point in Egyptian history it was decided that Ra meant "operative and creative power" – a fair analysis of the power of the sun.
June 21st, Summer Solstice, is Ra's day. It takes but a moment to return to the ancestral roots of humanity and the footsteps of a pharaoh by repeating the following praises to Ra. They were found inscribed on the walls of royal tombs of the XIXth and XXth Dynasties at Thebes.
"Praise be to thee, O Ra, exalted Sekhem*, "the sender forth "of light into his Circle; thou art he who maketh the "darkness to be in his Circle and thou "coverest those who are therein. "Praise be to thee, O Ra, exalted Sekhem, the illuminer "of bodies in the horizons; "thou art he who entereth into his Circle."
*Literal meaning of the word Sekhem is "Power".
From the Pyramid Texts comes a most beautiful hymn:
"Homage to thee, O thou who risest in the horizon as "Ra, "thou restest upon law unchangeable and unalterable. "Thou "passest over the sky, and every face watcheth thee and "thy "course, for thou hast been hidden from their gaze. Thou "dost "show thyself at dawn and at eventide day by day. The "Sektet* "boat, wherein is the Majesty, goeth forth with light; thy "beams "are upon all faces; the [number] of red and yellow rays "cannot be known, nor can thy bright beams be told. The "lands "of the gods, and the lands of Punt* must be seen, ere "that which "is hidden [in thee] may be measured. Alone and by "thyself thou "dost manifest thyself when thou comest into being "above Nu*. "May I advance, even as thou dost advance; may I never "cease to "go forward as thou never ceasest to go forward, even "though it be "for a moment; for with strides thou dost in one little "moment "pass over the spaces which would need millions and "millions of "years [for men to pass over; this] thou doest and then "thou dost "sink to rest. Thou puttest an end to the hours of the "night, and "thou dost count them, even thou; thou endest them in "thine "own appointed season, and the earth becometh light. "Thou "settest thyself therefore before thy handiwork in the "likeness of "Ra [when] thou risest on the horizon.
*About the Sektet boat: The early Egyptians gave Ra two boats in which to make his daily journey across the sky. The Sektet boat is Ra's evening boat and symbolic of dusk. *Punt is an ancient name for Egypt. *Nu is another word for sky.
There is a profound and stable strength in the simple fact that the Ra we see on June 21, 2008, is the same Ra witnessed on a dusty Egyptian dusk in 3320, BC.
We survive.
