The Glimpse

shimmering in the distance
and i beg to differ at the glimpse
i've been shown so early
is it a mirage, do my eyes play tricks
i walk to the source to investigate
"elementary my dear"
is whispered into my ear
"keep wandering down the path to which you adhere"
and in the distance what glistens is clear
when you find yourself it will appear
but be warned

if it finds you first i know this is your greatest fear
looking deep into you as you receive its penance stare
face to face and you look into the mirror
i give a deceived look
all around
and to the source of the voice i scream my reply

"you betray me with a glimpse of the beautiful
and take it all away in one foul swoop
i'll walk the path
keep an eye on it from a distance
i want to know if this is true
if it is so elementary
i want proof"
